Steamship "ROBERT E. LEE" (MSN 1439)
OverviewMISSISSIPPI STEAMSHIP
The first highways in America were the major rivers, which had allowed the growth of trade and transport. By the arrival of this steamer (idea of Fulton and Livingston the first builders of riverboats) made it possible to navigate the major rivers even against the current. The search for speed inspired many incredible matches.
One of the most famous races is the race between Natchez and Robert E. Lee, held in 1870 between New Orleans and Saint Louis. After 750 mile of water the Robert E. Lee wins the race, who covered the distance in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes.
